The Department for Equality and Feminism is the entity responsible for the Catalan Government’s migration management through the Secretariat for Equality.
A cross-cutting approach, consensus, intergovernmental coordination, inter-administrative cooperation and dialogue with civil society are the main features of this management which focuses both on the initial reception of migrants as well as inclusion and participation in Catalan society as its key cornerstones.
As one of the six regional partners, Catalonia tested the tools and instruments developed under REGIN. It informed and worked with public officials and stakeholders to understand the key role of integration in providing social cohesion (training and capacity building sessions) and promoted and facilitated interactive and innovative activities to foster inclusion.
In collaboration with CIDOB and MPG, it also coordinated the work on indicators with the other regional partners.
PILOT INTEGRATION ACTION
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOR MIGRANT YOUTH
Over the course of July 2021, Catalonia successfully implemented a pilot action to improve the inclusion of migrant youth in the region within the framework of the REGIN project. This pilot action aimed to address one of the most challenging areas for inclusion the Catalan government faces: the educational success of migrant students and their access to higher education. To tackle this issue, the Catalonia region brought together five principals from high complex secondary schools who selected for this pilot action, 42 students aged 13-15 years in compulsory secondary education. Those students have experienced a migratory process, either them or their parents, and hold some disadvantages regarding educational success.
DEVELOPING ROBOTICS AND PROGRAMMING SKILLS
The pilot action consisted of five extracurricular activities on those skills most demanded in the current labour market, robotics and programming, in the light of improving educational prospects with quality instruction.
The activities consisted of 10 two-hour sessions focused both on technology and the future participant’s entry into the workforce. Therefore, as a novelty, two trainers simultaneously assisted in the class, one teacher with a technological background and one educator with a social profile, who provided psycho-social support and focused on soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and self-perception.
Students worked in pairs during the programming and robotics workshops. They took the lead in their own learning process, deciding which digital project they wanted to develop, which were mobile applications in most cases. In the last session, actively engaged students presented the projects they had created and reflected upon their educational future and the possibility to get into technical and vocational education.
